Baking with Sourdough Starter
November 14 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
One of our popular classes is back – join Darrold & Marty Glanville from Sunrise Flour Mill as they share how to bake with sourdough starter. The goal of this class is to give you the confidence to start baking nutritious sourdough bread. Learn why it’s good for you, how to make a basic loaf, how to bake in a cast iron skillet, and how to maintain sourdough starter in your home. You will establish a bread schedule that works for your lifestyle, and connect with other bakers in community that share your passion for bread. Each person will take home a bit of starter from Sunrise Flour Mill.
After retiring from careers in special education (Marty) and sales in the cleaning industry (Darrold), the Glanvilles now own and operate Sunrise Flour Mill which grinds organic and heritage wheat varieties. Their journey started when Darrold wanted to learn to bake bread as good as those loaves they enjoyed throughout Europe. During that time Darrold started having health problems—even having to sleep in a seated position due to sinus and other issues. With no answers coming from the medical profession, he eventually gave up gluten. Two days later he was better. But the Glanvilles missed their breads! They then discovered that organic heritage wheats, though still full of gluten, did not bother Darrold. And Marty’s joint pain also disappeared. The Glanvilles recently updated their mill, allowing them to mill whole grain flour that is as fine as white while also providing for more nutritious baked goods. As they have for years, they continue to sell their flower at Mill City Farmers Market in Minneapolis.
